2.8 Explain licensing concepts.
📘CompTIA Server+ (SK0-005)
1. Software License
A license is the legal permission to use software. It tells you what you can and cannot do with the software. Owning a license does not mean you automatically get support or updates—it only gives you the right to use the software under certain conditions.
Key points:
- Purpose: Grants the right to legally use software.
- Types of licenses: Per-user, per-device, per-server, subscription-based, etc.
- Restrictions: Some licenses limit installation to a certain number of devices or users.
- Ownership: You do not “own” the software itself; you just have permission to use it.
Example in IT:
- A company buys Microsoft Windows Server Standard license for 5 servers. This license allows them to install and run the server OS on exactly 5 servers. Installing it on a 6th server without a license would violate the agreement.
Important for the exam:
- Licenses are legal usage permissions, not guarantees of updates, patches, or help.
2. Maintenance and Support
Maintenance and support is a separate service that ensures software continues to work correctly and stays up-to-date. It usually requires an additional fee beyond the license.
Key points:
- Purpose: Provides updates, bug fixes, security patches, and technical support.
- Duration: Usually paid annually or monthly.
- Coverage: May include:
- Software updates and patches
- Security fixes
- Technical helpdesk support
- Upgrades to new versions
- Optional but recommended: Some software can run without support, but having it reduces downtime and security risks.
Example in IT:
- A company buys VMware vSphere licenses to run virtual machines.
- The license allows the software to be used.
- Maintenance/support subscription ensures the company can get help if a VM crashes, and that they can upgrade to the latest version safely.
3. Differences Between License and Maintenance/Support
| Feature | License | Maintenance/Support |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Legal right to use software | Keeps software up-to-date and functional |
| Ownership | Permission only, not the software itself | Service provided by vendor |
| Includes | Usually does not include updates or help | Updates, patches, and technical help |
| Payment | One-time or subscription | Usually annual or monthly |
| Required to use software | Yes | No (but recommended) |
| Example | Microsoft Office license | Microsoft Office 365 support subscription |
4. How IT Teams Use Them Together
In a real IT environment:
- IT buys a license to install a database on 10 servers.
- They also purchase support to get critical security patches and vendor help when a server crashes.
- Without the support, the database works, but if a serious bug or security issue arises, the IT team cannot get help or official fixes.
Tip for exams:
- Remember: License = legal use
- Maintenance/support = help and updates
- A company can have a license without support, but support cannot exist without a license.
✅ Summary in simple terms:
- License: “I am allowed to use this software.”
- Support/Maintenance: “I pay to make sure the software keeps working, is secure, and I can get help if it breaks.”
